Creating Positive Spaces for Kids
In 2023 I had challenged myself to participate in every Spoonflower design challenge for the entire year. It was no small feat, but it helped open my designs to broader themes and audiences and urged me to create new fun patterns and collections that have become quite popular.
One such collection was first imagined on a beach during a family vacation to Croatia while thinking about the latest “The Skies Above Bedding” themed challenge. As I watched my daughter play in the ocean, I thought about how I wanted to make something for her, and other young minds like her. I wanted to make something that would remind her that she can do anything. All children, regardless of background, ethnicity, or gender should be brought up with the same opportunity to explore, grow, and to be who they are. Creating safe, positive, and welcoming spaces is vital to achieve that and so the Happy Balloon collection was born.
The Happy Balloons Collection
The main design for the collection placed 8th in the challenge and its popularity soared. Since last summer, the collection has been used globally by families as kids room wallpaper, wall art, and fabric maximalist décor. To my immense joy, this month the main print was featured in British Vogue! Plus, two of the pattens in this collection have been licensed by Cloud 9 for their laminated fabric line, releasing this month, which has been a huge full circle moment. I have been a fan of Cloud 9 for years; they were my go-to brand for sewing projects I created for my daughter when she was a baby. So, to see a collection that she inspired featured by Cloud 9 has been a beautiful moment.

Art Licensing
With licensing I can set my own schedule, decide what to create, and work from anywhere. It is not always perfect, but it is so rewarding, particularly when you see how your work is used by others. Art licensing takes time, commitment, and patience. It can be hard but having a community can make it easier.

With the freedom to decide what I design and when, I wanted to experiment more with text-based design and motivational patterns and illustration for kids. I had gotten tired of the pastel and earth tone trends, and I wanted something vibrant that kids would love and connect with. So, using the same bright rainbow color palette, I played around with animal shapes and phrases with fun imagery and word play and the Playful Meadow Collection came to life.
The Playful Meadow Collection
While this collection has its own unique theme, the cohesive color palette and focus on fun, childlike forms make Playful Meadow and Happy Balloons a perfect pair. Parents and Interior Decorators can use any combination of the patterns in this collection to create colorful spaces for kids such as nurseries and bedrooms or playrooms while incorporating playful patterns and inspirational quotes. Add playful patterns to your space quickly with Spoonflower’s easy to use and Renter Friendly Peel-and-Stick or Pre-Pasted Wallpaper. Or opt to put up some cute positive affirmations with Wall Art Illustrations from both collections.
